We will Rise
By: Ariana Figueroa

You’ve looked us down all your life
Believing all those stupid lies.
Why do you look down
Is it because we are brown?
We know what we are worth
Have been taught this since our birth.

You may shoot us with your words,
You can cut us with your eyes,
But still like air, we rise.

    Does our confidence upset you?
I know this isn’t what you’re used to.
We will rise whether you like it or not.
    We will rise.
    We will rise.
    We will rise.

WHat does it mean to be american?

Being American literally mean to be born in America or be an American Citizen. The American ideology to be sure on who you are and what you do rather than what you don’t do. Being American gives people certain freedoms and privileges, which is why many are proud to call themselves American. To me the “American Dream” means that idea and picture of freedom and a better chance that the United States is portrayed as. My parents came to America thinking of their future and of their future kids. It is that sense of freedom and opportunity that it gives to people. Some opportunities that are granted are job opportunities and education wise as well. Some freedoms people search in America are from fleeing from a war, to start over or have a clean slate, and the pursuit of a free religion country. Many come here because they feel their future will be better in American soil because of the way the “American Dream” is depicted.

freedom + conflict

Freedom and conflict are topics that are paradoxical because they work against each other to have a balanced democracy and system. If there are no rules we would then not be allowed to have freedom. Based off of the first amendment's right to give us freedom of the press they should be able to write what they want, but because conflict exists we would then not be able to write and say things that will be considered to put someone in danger. Conflict and freedom relate because they balance and limit each other, just like in a paradoxical relation. An example is freedom of the press an government. The press can write stories and try to publish them but a system, called Prior Restraint limits what the press can and can't publish. If the press and government worked together they might be able to work together to hide things from the public.

october reflection

This year I am doing fairly good with my academic goals.  So far I have read 3 books and I am currently starting on the next one. On my goal regarding getting A's on my math tests, I need to work harder to get one. I feel I am doing very well in participating in class, I try and raise my hand every time I know the material. A strength I know I have in this class is not being shy to answer questions and ask them, some weaknesses I see I have in this class is making sure to read every day and writing good essays. Writing an essay is fairly hard for me because I need to expand my vocabulary in order to come up with a descent draft. In November I would like to have one on one conversations with Ms. Park about our essays and about us so we can get to know each other  better. By having conversations and communicating with my teacher I will feel more comfortable and do better in this class.

F.I.N.D. BLOG POST

One fact about "The Crucible" is that the people in Salem were all turned against each other and they were all blaming each other with no justification. While reading "The Crucible" I felt confused as to why a whole town would base off their accusations on a declaration made by a couple of teenage girls. They blamed people for unjustified reasons and worst of all was that they had no proof to prove that their statement was correct. A new idea I learned by reading "The Crucible" was that the Salem witch Trials wasn't the only time that scapegoating took place in the United States. The Red Scare also took place in the 1950's and this was the event that had Non- Communists driving out Communists. People would blame their neighbors, people they've known their whole life, it had America against itself once again. A decision that I will make based on my understanding of "The Crucible" is that I will think before judging other because it may cause innocent people unfair consequences.

Growth mindset

Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and talents can be developed and that people are not born with them. Having a growth mindset means understanding that you will always continue to grow your knowledge and can always be better. There are multiple points of views and patterns that are used to address the topic of growth mindset. In an article written by Marina Krakovsky, she profiles a Stanford psychologist named Carol Dweck who believes “you’ll reach new heights if you learn to embrace the occasional tumble”(1). Furthermore, people with a growth mindset tend to accept a challenge when they are faced with them, they don’t feel threatened by predicaments, and they confidently approach them because they know in the end they can learn from mistakes and challenges (5). Patterns in your surroundings and your influencers contribute to what mindset someone has and how they view that certain mindset. In the end, what kind of mindset you have is important because it will shape your learning experience. Will you be stumped because of challenges or continue to face them head on?
Artifact

For our artifact we decided to do a wall that represents the different levels of success. These levels symbolize different accomplishments that people have for themselves For instance bronze represents the first level of success in which people with a growth mindset thrive in due to their capacity of learning and perseverance . Silver is the second level of success it represents accomplishments they have not gave up on. Gold would be a high level of success but on a growth mindset it would not mean that once they have reached that point they are done learning. The books are there to symbolize the challenges they have overcame throughout their journey to success. The person in the yellow shirt is the person with the growth mindset. The reason why we made his shirt yellow is because yellow is the color that of success and perseverance. The person with the purple shirt is the person with the fixed mindset. We chose the color purple for the shirt because the color purple evokes frustration. This represents the frustration fixed mindsets feel when they face a challenge because they think that if they get it wrong they feel they won’t look smart. The purple also shows wisdom, which is something that they are full of as well. The person with the growth mindset has books stacked up as stairs that represent like a path toward success, notice that some books are open and that is because growth mindsets know that they never finish learning. On the other hand the person with the fixed mindset has a closed book because after they have looked at the challenge put by them they feel they can’t overcome it.
